Gravel Road
when I was a kid
maybe five or six
figured the whole world was my home
our backyard an’ woods behind
bare dirt under the tree I climbed
I knew every bird nest and bone
out front was a gravel road
turned to pavement in a mile or so
cars passin’ by draggin’ the dust
wondered where it goes
somewhere
you were doin’ the same
the road goes on forever
at least as long as I’m alive
often in a circle
sometimes in a line
I’ve logged some miles
fillin’ my sleeve with tricks
thinkin’ the whole world was my home
as they say — ”footloose and fancy free”
enjoyin’ the ride through my roarin’ twenties
no moss gatherin’ on this stone
I’ve caused my share of scars
put in my time in bars
but every time I tried settlin’ down
was just a house of cards
somewhere
you were doin’ the same
the road goes on forever
at least as long as I’m alive
often in a circle
sometimes in a line
maybe it’s chance
maybe we make our luck
tired of walkin’ the road alone
when I saw you I knew you’d be mine
come what might — weren’t no denyin’
no use tryin’ to stop wind blowin’
more miles ahead or more behind...
some of the thoughts that fill my time
when you’re with me it don’t matter so much
crow’s feet become laugh lines
somehow
you are feelin’ the same
the road goes on forever
at least as long as we’re alive
often in a circle
sometimes in a line
