Orchid Assembly
Electronics and assembly follow finish.
The finish is tung oil over purple stain. Note the lovely variegations in the stacked laminate neck. This particular instrument I wanted to have a very organic finish, as if directly touching raw materials. Celebrate the grain of the wood, instead of filling the pores and dipping it in plastic, as is so often done in a factory. Over time, this finish will rub and wear and scar and show belt buckle marks...acquiring a lived-in feel.
Like your favorite shoes.
The electronics cavities are lined with self-adhesive copper shielding foil. The wire "worm" holes linking access ports throughout the body are actually 1/4" copper tubing (shown for position). I realize this is totally obsessive, but I value silence.
Silence. Plucked note. Sustain. More sustain. Silence.
No hum, buzz, or fluorescent light bulbs in this band.
COPPER = QUIET
I fabricated all of the access plates, screws, and strap buttons from stainless steel. Plastic sucks. Instead, a solid, satisfying "click" as you insert the cord into the jack. The strap buttons are 3/8" diameter stainless steel bolts epoxied deep into the body.
