All items will be fitted in compartments of an iron clasped black hide covered chest decorated with brass tacks and securely double locked. Interior covered in wool and hand blocked wall paper in neatest manner.

With one exception the components in this Officer's Mess Kit are specially hand made for this kit by American Artisans employing style and construction techniques taken from original 18th Century examples. John Pierce

John Pierce, Glassblowing Artisan, business partner of P & B Glassworks, Williamsburg, Virginia died Sunday past. He leaves behind a wife and her two daughters.

John trained and worked at Historic Jamestown and made award winning contemporary art objects as well. The Living History Shop used John's work in the Washington Mess Kit at Rockingham, Kingston, NJ, and the Washington Campaign Liquor Chest at Colonial National Historic Park, Yorktown: Battlefield Visitor Center, as well as other requirements.

We will miss him.

Field Equipage

In the 18th century, travelling under canvas on military campaign, or while relocating, did not require sleeping on the ground, for those with proper means.

For all but the poorest, comfort was a primary concern, and their field equipage was of a fashion to match their station. Clergy, merchants, military officers, surveyors, lawyers, and plantation owners would all have had elaborate traveling furnishings plus servants to attend to their needs and comfort. It is toward this end that the Living History Shop offers the necessities of life as it was then.

We invite variation and new projects within our time period (1750-1790). Custom orders invited for other documented 18th Century items.
